Located in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, Dudhwa National Park is situated adjacent to the Indo-Nepal border. Established in 1958 as a wildlife sanctuary for swamp deer, it got notified as a National Park in 1977, and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1987. Together with Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, it comprises the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. During summer, temperatures can soar up to 40°C, with mild winters between 20-30°C.
The park has one of the finest forests of India, with some trees dating more than 150 years. Apart from tigers and swamp deers, Dudhwa is home to sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, Indian rhinoceros, sloth bear, ratel, jackal, civets, jungle cat, fishing cat, and leopards. Interestingly, the Hispid hare which was once thought to be extinct, was rediscovered here. Dudhwa also houses half the population of barasinghas. It is also a bird watcher’s paradise, with over 400 species inhabiting the forest, both resident as well as migratory.
